Frequently asked questions

Some common questions before starting therapy. If your question is not here, feel free to get in touch.

How do I know if I should start therapy?

If something has been on your mind for a long time, or is affecting your daily life, sleep or relationships, it may be worth seeking support. You can also start therapy without a specific problem, simply to understand yourself better.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We talk about what brings you here, your expectations and anything you would like to share about your background. You decide how much to share.

Is online therapy as effective as in person therapy?

For many people, online sessions can be just as productive as in person sessions. What matters is being in a quiet, private space where you feel comfortable. We can decide together which option suits you better.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes. What you share in sessions is kept confidential within professional ethics and the law. The legal limits of confidentiality, for example when someone's life is at serious risk, are discussed openly in the first session.

How long does therapy take?

It varies from person to person. Some issues can be worked on within a few months, while others need longer. We review the process together at regular intervals.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and can prescribe medication when needed. A clinical psychologist specialises in psychological assessment and therapy and does not prescribe. When needed, the two professions work together.

Which therapy approaches do you use?

I draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and psychodynamic (psychoanalytically informed) therapy. We decide together which approach to emphasise, based on your needs and goals.

Are sessions online or in person?

Both are possible. Online sessions take place over a secure video call; if you prefer to meet in person, the details are shared when you book.

How can I book a session?

You can fill in the form on the contact page or send an email. You will usually hear back on the same day to find a suitable day and time.

I live outside Turkey. Can we meet online?

Yes. Online sessions take place over a secure video call in Turkish or English, and evening times in European time zones can be arranged. See the page for people living abroad for details.
